STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – There have now been 100 COVID-19 related deaths in Portage County.
In a news release, the county’s Health Department said that includes 96 confirmed deaths as well as four probable deaths.
“Portage County has experienced a lower fatality rate to COVID-19 than surrounding counties, but this solemn occasion marks a horrible benchmark that we have surpassed 100 deaths of community members as consequence of COVID-19 infection,” said Gary Garske, Portage County’s health officer. “Our community grieves the loss of each community member and extends our sympathies to their loved ones.”
To remember those who have died, the county will play host to a memorial at the Ruth Gilfry Center from 5:30pm to 8:30pm Wednesday. The center is at 817 Whiting Ave., Stevens Point.
Statewide, 8,495 deaths have been confirmed to be from COVID-19, with a case fatality percentage of 1.1%.
Worldwide, more than 5 million people have died from the virus, while in the United States that number is at 746,000.
