WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Health officials in Wisconsin have announced that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is now available for children between the ages of 5 and 11 under emergency use authorization.
“It’s important to vaccinate kids because although their risk is lower than that of adults, kids are still getting sick and are still dying from COVID-19,” says Aspirus System Senior Physician Executive Dr. Robyn Schertz “So, it’s important to have that option to keep your children safe.”
Shertz says the shot is the same formula but roughly one-third of the adult dose of the vaccine. Preliminary data shows the children’s dose is over 90.5% effective and does offer protection from the more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.
The vaccine is given as a two-shot series with each dose about 21 days apart. Those interested in having their children vaccinated against COVID-19 can make appointments with their family care provider or at a local pharmacy. Other options include vaccination clinics such as the one set up in Wausau at Northcentral Technical College.
