GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — With the bombshell news of the unvaccinated Aaron Rodgers testing positive for COVD-19 and practice squad quarterback Kurt Benkert already in the COVID-19 protocol, the Green Bay Packers were in need of a QB on Wednesday.
The Packers made a call to former NFL quarterback Blake Bortles and he quickly agreed to come to Green Bay and get ready to back up Jordan Love this Sunday.
Bortles was with the Packers for a short time in the off-season before Rodgers agreed to return to the team.
Rodgers and the Packers could face fines or other punishment from the NFL for not following league protocols regarding unvaccinated players. Rodgers had appeared regularly around the team facilities without a mask. Other unvaccinated players such as Allen Lazard were only available to reporters through Zoom calls.
Rodgers also had a recent Halloween party with teammates that might have violated league rules over unvaccinated players gathering in large groups and being unmasked.
When asked this summer if he was vaccinated he misled reporters by replying “I’m immunized’. He reportedly had been using an untested homeopathic treatment that the league doctors did not sign off on.
Rodgers was not made available for comment on Wednesday and his agent didn’t respond to various requests for comment either.
At his press conference Packer coach Matt LaFleur was asked if Rodgers “misled” or “lied” about his vaccination status. He replied ” That’s a great question for Aaron…I’m not getting into that.”
