TOWN OF CASSIAN, WI (WSAU-WXPR) The DNR and USDA Wildlife Services is working with an Oneida County landowner to deal with wolves on his property.
The DNR issued a “human health and safety” complaint for wolves near the town of Cassian.
Large Carnivore Specialist Randy Johnson says a homeowner called USDA Wildlife Services back in September. The person reported several wolves close to his home, the outbuildings, and cranberry marsh where workers are often walking around.
Johnson says trail cameras and an USDA specialist confirmed the wolf activity. “They were able to document numerous wolf tracks in the area within view of the house, near the shop buildings. That’s what classifies this then as a confirmed human health safety complaint is essentially the repeated wolf activity that’s in close proximity to people and activity.”
The homeowner is now able to apply for a permit to kill or remove the wolves.
Johnson says there have been no reports of the wolves attacking humans in this incident or in any other time in modern Wisconsin history. He says this is a precautionary measure. “In this situation, I think the individual is doing everything that they should. We contract with USDA wildlife services to provide conflict assistance and abatement in these situations.”
If you have wolves that you think are a problem on your property, you can report them to USDA wildlife services.
