PISCATAWAY, NJ (WSAU) — In these days of more than 40 bowl games it’s become debatable whether being “bowl eligible” actually means a successful season, but you can’t debate Wisconsin’s recent run of success on the football field.
Graham Mertz tossed three touchdown passes while Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi each added a rushing score as the Badgers thumped Rutgers 52-3 on Saturday to notch their 6th win of the season and fifth in a row, securing a .500 season and a 20th consecutive trip to a bowl game.
The two sides ended the first quarter with Wisconsin holding a 7-3 lead before the Badgers rattled off 24 straight points in the second quarter including a Caesar Williams interception returned for a touchdown and two passing TD’s from Mertz.
Wisconsin is now one of three Division I FBS programs that will compete in 20 straight bowl games. The others on that list include Georgia and Oklahoma.
The Big Ten has 11 bowl tie-ins this year including the Rose Bowl, which takes either the conference champion or next-best team if the winner of the title game is selected for the College Football Playoff. The rest of the games then submit their preference of teams to the Big Ten office who assigns teams accordingly.
Teams may not go to the same game in consecutive years. Wisconsin will not be selected for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, as the Big Ten does not have a tie-in with that game this year.
Wisconsin returns home next weekend to face Northwestern. The game will kick at 11 AM, pregame coverage on WSAU will begin at 9 AM on Saturday, November 13th.
