WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — There is a warning about a t-shirt scam in central and northern Wisconsin.
Firefighters in Wausau, Merrill, Rhinelander, Stevens Point, and Eagle River say they are not selling t-shirts to raise money, though some residents say they’ve been getting official-looking text messages with a link to buy a limited-edition T-shirt.
Officers say the messages are fake. Anyone who gets one is encouraged to delete it without clicking on any links.
Merrill Battalion Chief Tadd Wegener says this isn’t the first scam to target people in the name of a fire department, he says it’s just the latest.
