RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – Last year saw more people than ever finding ways to get outdoors- hunting was no exception. Deer license sales grew 3.5% last year from the year before.
Eric Lobner is the Wisconsin DNR Wildlife Management Program Director. He believes it has to do with a resurgence in the interest in having locally grown protein source. “That whole mentality is continuing strong today and goes back many generations as a primary driver why people hunted and what brough them to Wisconsin to hunt.”
The DNR expects more than half a million hunters in the woods for the upcoming 9-day gun deer hunt. Lobner says it’s a boost to rural economies. “Wisconsin hunters upwards of $2.1 billion in retail sales and contribute more than $235 million to the state and local economies. That’s certainly something that you got to be about. Certainly worth mentioning.”
The gun deer season opens at sunrise this Saturday.
