WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau East senior Luke Fenhaus was named winner from seven finalists of the Kulwicki Driver Development Program award. The prize is more than $54,000 to further his racing career.
Fenhaus had a fantastic year on the track in 2021. Among his many wins was the super late model track championship at Slinger Raceway and he also became the youngest winner in the 42 year history of the Slinger Nationals.
He was rookie of the year on the ARCA Midwest Tour after finishing second for the season. And he impressed some big names in racing when finished second in a made for TV event finishing only behind IndyCar vet Marco Andretti and beating NASCAR vet Tony Stewart.
Todd Thelen, the promoter for Slinger Speedway told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel this “stuff hasn’t been done since Matt Kenseth”. He said “Kids don’t come out and run this well”.
Fenhaus became the 3rd Wisconsin driver to win the Kulwicki award which honors the late Alan Kulwicki, a Wisconsin driver who won the NASCAR championship in 1992.
Fenhaus told the Journal-Sentinel he wants race more down south in 2022 and enter some bigger races. His next race is Dec 5th in Pensacola Florida.
