ST PAUL, MN and EAST LANSING, MI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin women’s hockey team won their first-ever showdown with the University of St. Thomas 7-1 on Saturday.
Six different Badgers recorded goals in the game including two from Maddi Wheeler. She added two assists in the win as well.
Sophi Shirley and Makenna Webster both added a goal and an assist. Brette Pettet also scored.
Kennedy Blair made ten saves over the first two periods to earn the win in net. Wisconsin went to Junior Cami Kronish for the third, she only faced two shots in the final 20:00 but saved both.
St. Thomas is in their first year in the WCHA after being involuntarily removed from their Division III league last summer and getting a waiver from the NCAA to move directly to Division I. The Badgers and Tommies will go at it again this afternoon.
The Badger men overcame a 2-0 deficit after one period but couldn’t finish in a 5-2 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.
Tarek Baker and Sam Stange each scored in the second for the Badgers. Brock Caufield recorded an assist. Jared Moe took the loss allowing five goals on 30 shots.
The Spartans won Friday’s matchup as well, moving them above Wisconsin into 5th place in the league standings. Wisconsin drops to 6th.
Wisconsin will pause its conference schedule for the next three games- hosting Clarkson of New York for two next weekend and the USA Hockey Under-18 development team for an exhibition to open December.
