RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — Add cranberries to the list of items that could be in short supply in the coming weeks.
Wisconsin State Cranberry Grower’s Association Executive Director Tom Lochner said unsettled weather over the last year in Central Wisconsin led to about 100 million fewer pounds of berries making it to market.
“We had a number of weather events that impacted the crop and here in Wisconsin we are well below what we would expect to be a normal crop and fruit is a little bit scarce,” Lochner told WXPR Radio in Rhinelander.
While Northwoods growers had a typical crop, the combination of an early winter 2020 frost and unseasonably warm temperatures into October of this year worked against producers responsible for the bulk of the state’s harvest.
Lochner says while you may have had an easy time finding the fruits for your Thanksgiving dinner, it may be wise to buy extra now and freeze them in case you want to have them available for Christmas.
