Milwaukee Brewers
MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — The Milwaukee Brewers participated in the Major League Baseball Rule 5 draft on Thursday, adding a former UW-La Crosse pitcher in the process.
Caleb Boushley is now in the Brewers system after being plucked away from the Padres. The Hortonville native holds several UWL career records including wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. He was selected by the Padres in the 33rd round of the 2017 draft.
Milwaukee will now purchase Boushley’s contract from the Padres for $24,500. He was the only player taken by the Brewers.
The Brewers did lose one player in the draft when the LA Dodgers selected C Kekai Rios, who spent much of last season with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Milwaukee will get that same amount from the Dodgers as compensation.
In the Minor League phase of the Rule Five draft teams are allowed to select any player not protected on a 38-man AAA roster, provided they have a vacancy on their own 38-man AAA roster. Teams with multiple vacancies can select players until they have filled out that roster.
There were five rounds in this year’s draft, with the Maimi Marlins the only team to select a player in each round. The Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals, and World Champion Atlanta Braves joined Miami in making four selections.
Of course, baseball’s owners locked out the players earlier this month, which prevents clubs from having contact or dealing with players that ended the season on the 40-man roster. That does not prevent teams from conducting business with minor-league players, which allowed for the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 draft to take place.
Major League Baseball has also announced that no matter what the labor status is with the MLBPA- there will be a full minor league season in 2022.
