We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
As the Jefferson Airplane slowed and then stopped their touring in late 1971-early 1972, it gave the “side-project” of Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen the ability to do more shows and more recording. Hot Tuna’s 2nd LP of the year, “First Pull Up, Then Pull Down” was a live LP recorded at a small club called Chateau Liberte in Los Gatos California.
It features Kaukonen and Casady along with drummer Sammy Piazza and electric violinist Papa John Creach who was having a fruitful year as he had also released his first solo LP.
Casaday, Kaukonen and Piazza played on a few tracks including these two….
The album also featured an interesting take on “Over The Rainbow”….
And Creach added a smoking violin to many of the of the tracks on “First Pull Up, The Pull Down” including the lead off track “John’s Other” . Creach and Kaukonen cook on “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” also. Much of their repetrorie was old blues songs by the likes of Rev Gary Davis and others. ”
The album also features some nice acoustic country-blues picking on “Want You To Know” and “Never Happen No More”.
Kaukonen isnt really a strong vocalist but his guitar playing makes up for any deficiencies.
This kind of music was popular at the time and it gave fans of the old Airplane something to dig their ears into….
