WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is reminding those who will be out on New Year’s Eve to stay sober or plan for a ride home.
“Our deputies, and I’m sure other law enforcement out there, are aware that it’s a prime day that people [may] drink and drive,” said Lieutenant Andrew Seubert. “We will be enforcing the OWI laws.”
Seubert says there are several options to help you avoid putting yourself or someone else in danger including designating a sober driver or calling friends and family for a ride. There are also Uber and Lyft ride-sharing services available everywhere, along with taxi services in many cities.
He says it’s best to plan ahead because many of those options will be busy, especially the ride-sharing services. But, even if you do have to wait, you’ll still save yourself a lot of trouble as opposed to risking it and getting caught.
“You may go to jail until you are sober. You will have to deal with the suspension or revocation of your drivers’ license, an IID (Ignition Interlock Device) placed in your vehicle, court costs and insurance,” said Seubert.
That’s in addition to the risk of more serious consequences such as serious injury or death to yourself or others on the roadway.
Seubert adds that drivers should be on their game all day as some roads in the county remain slick or snow-covered after this week’s winter precip.
