STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The new artistic light pole in Stevens Point is already drawing interest from across the nation, and city leaders are busy planning what the riverfront area could become over the next few years.

Mayor Mike Wiza says a GoFundMe account has already been set up to help fund the next piece, and the first donation came from someone who doesn’t even live in the city.
“I had someone on the East Coast who commented and said ‘I love my hometown but I don’t live there anymore, how can I make the next one happen?,'” said Wiza. “She suggested starting a GoFundMe page, so we have a GoFundMe now that has about $250 in it.”
As of Sunday evening, the account has grown to $340 with a goal of raising $5,000. Those who wish to donate can do so here.
The Mayor says his assistant has already started a file of ideas for what future light poles could look like. Right now that list includes everything from a dragon to a lumberjack or a saxophone, cornet, and bass jazz trio. “Anybody that has ideas, we’d love to hear them. Draw them out on a piece of paper or use photoshop and show me what you’ve got.”

Wiza figures there may be room for up to 20 of the artistic lights if they can find the right funding sources. The first light was funded through Wiza’s victory in the recent River Cities Mayor’s art challenge, which saw his paint-by-numbers watercolor portrait of Elvis Presley raise the most money in an online auction.
