Skyler Opelt
MEDFORD, WI (WSAU) — Skyler Opelt has now been formally charged with homicide by negligent use of a vehicle in connection with a November crash that killed a 36-year-old woman and injured eight children.
Opelt was in court on Tuesday where five charges were brought against him include the count of homicide along with four other counts of reckless driving. Investigators say Opelt had been using drugs before operating his vehicle the day of the crash, and was on his cell phone before, during, and after the incident.
Investigators say Opelt’s eyes became glassy and he passed out at the scene. He was revived with a dose of Narcan.
Opelt initially denied using drugs, but later admitted he had but he didn’t know what kind.
Court documents also accuse Opelt of not cooperating with those trying to help the victims at the scene of the crash.
Opelt is being held on $100,000 bond and will return to court on March 9th.
