MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Over 11,000 new COVID-19 infections were reported on Thursday in Wisconsin, breaking a single-day record that stood for less than a week.
Wisconsin DHS officials reported 11,574 new cases on Thursday.
There were also 32 deaths reported.
“Omicron is spreading faster than anything we’ve seen before,” said DHS Bureau of Communicable Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ryan Westergaard.
It’s also believed to be an undercount. DHS Bureau of Communicable Diseases Director Traci DeSalvo says that many people are symptomatic with COVID-19, getting at-home tests, and then not reporting those tests to health officials.
There is good news, however. Dr. Westergaard says a silver lining exists in that Omicron appears to result in less severe illness on average.
