STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Tenants at Edgewater Manor in Stevens Point, the soon-to-close apartment complex, will get incentives to move according.
The City Council voted on Monday to offer some of the remaining tenants financial help, while also letting the city shed responsibility for the complex which operates at a loss. “Long ago, months ago, our rents did not even come close to covering our costs. So we are literally bleeding money. We’re effectively losing money that we could be using to help these people relocate,” Mayor Mike Wiza told WAOW TV.
There are 12 tenants are remaining from what was once more than 80. They can get up to $2,000 if they move out by February 28th. The incentive drops to $1,500 if they are out by March 31st, and $1,000 for those who vacate by April 15th.
Wiza says the hope behind the initiative is to help anyone that needs it, while not impeding on anyone’s status. “If they’re low income or get some sort of grant or assistance from the state, we definitely do not want to affect that. However, we’ve worked out ways where we can subsidize the housing without affecting that,” he said.
Other relevant relocation costs would be paid out of a city-established “Edgewater Fund.”
