WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Liberation and Freedom Committee has outlined its goals for 2022.
Committee Chair Tom Kilian says those include better communication with the public and better visibility. “Some of those [ideas] include holding events to better interface with the public. Both our own events as well as attending local events that are relevant to the committee,” said Kilian. “Additionally, more than one committee member thought it was important to broaden our communication to multi-lingual communications.”
Kilian says that could include things like making meeting agendas or summaries of key items available in other languages. The committee has also included better communication with local businesses on things like language barriers and a public information campaign to outline the committee’s role in the city.
He also feels the group should be a touchpoint between the city and the refugees who will be resettled in Wausau this year, especially in the area of language and translation services. “The idea would be to bring together different stakeholders from those who are needing translation to possible experts in the language arena to try to match needs to resolution.”
It’s unclear just what the group will do for the refugees, and depending on the action they may need to get the City Council’s approval before doing anything.
Kilian adds that the committee has been disorganized at times for various reasons but he feels that the group is heading in the right direction.
Other members of the committee include community activists like LaTanya Campbell, Bee Her, and Chris Norfleet.

The committee was formed as the Mayor’s Welcoming and Inclusivity Committee under former Mayor Robert Mielke.
