WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The Wausau 525 has been hosting snowmobile racing for nearly two decades. That’s coming to an end this weekend.
“It’s just time like any person or business to retire,” said Ralph Merwin, President and owner of the Wausau 525.
The snowmobiling competition brings hundreds of people together for a two-day race. The non-profit started in 2004, a year after Merwin’s son Philp “Flip” Merwin died in a snowmobile crash. To honor his son’s memory the competition and a scholarship fund, called Flip’s Fund, were started.
“He was a bubbly, smiley, fun guy, a hard worker, raced hard I’m sure he’d be very happy and impressed with what we are doing,” Merwin said.
Flip’s Fund has raised nearly $300,000 dollars and helped hundreds of families and organizations.
Merwin said he plans to continue Flips Fund.
