WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Super Bowl week tradition is underway for a Wausau woman.
Sue Decker is on the road with a van full of Wisconsin meats and cheeses making pit stops at inner-city homeless shelters and camps in every state between Wisconsin and California, where Super Bowl LVI will be played this Sunday.
Decker’s goal is to make a donation in every state along the route from Wausau to wherever the game is played. “This started when my mom passed away as a tribute to her,” said Decker. “Now, it’s a tribute to both my parents.”
Her deliveries include cheese from Nasonville Dairy and meat from Wenzel Farms. Decker adds that instead of dropping them off at food pantries, she goes into inner-cities where she feels the food is needed most.
“I go directly down into the inner cities. They are very appreciative, but also it’s very heartbreaking. Seeing firsthand the camps and people around there in the bigger cities. It’s very hard for me, sometimes I leave crying but then I feel very grateful that we are able to do this,” said Decker.
Decker typically doesn’t stay in the city for the game or any of the other fan-fest activities that take place before. She says the trip is more about helping out than football, but she does hope her kindness inspires both fans and non-fans to help out. “I hope that this inspires someone else to just take a bag of groceries somewhere or volunteer some time; just do something for the homeless.”
Decker says it’s a tradition that started in 2011 when the Packers played the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas and has been repeated each year since.
