WESTON, WI (WSAU) — Village leaders in Weston have announced that they will conduct voluntary testing for PFAS, or forever chemicals, in their drinking water supply.
Village Administrator Keith Donner says he’s planning to have those tests taken in the coming days, and the results will be made public.
Donner says previous tests for PFAS have occured in 2013 and 2015, and according to a press relase none of those samples showed levels above the proposed state standard of 20 parts per trillion in any of their six wells.
He adds that Weston water customers can feel confident that their water is safe to use for cooking and drinking.
Weston’s announcement comes just days after Wausau announced the results of PFAS testing that was conducted in December. Those results showed levels of PFAS above the proposed state maximum, but below federal standards. Wausau Water Works is set to hold a special meeting Tuesday morning to discuss the news.
The Rib Mountain water utility has also shut down one of its wells due to PFAS.
Governor Tony Evers has recently made more money availible to help water utilities test for the chemicals, but testing remains voluntairy.
