WESTON, WI (WSAU) — The Everest Metro Police Department and Marathon County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a false claim of an explosion at D.C. Everest Senior High Wednesday.
Dispatchers received the call just after 9:15 AM, saying there had been an explosion at the school. Officials immediately contacted the School Resource Officer, and a thorough search of the building was conducted with school leaders.
Assistant Superintendent Matt Spets says there were several Everest Metro Squads in the area for another reason. Within a minute that had turned their attention to the school.
“They were on site rapidly,” said Spets. “Our administrative team at the [High School] did a great job engaging and doing what they needed to do. executing the plan in case there was a real threat.”
He credits the team’s quick response with allowing the district to investigate the situation without interrupting the school day. No explosives were found and investigators have deemed there was no threat to the public, students, or staff at the school.
Spets adds that the early investigation has shown there’s no reason to believe that the call originated locally. They are also working with law enforcement to see if it could be part of some sort of national trend or social media challenge such as swatting. “We are interested to see what’s going on, we’re trying to get some clarity, details of the source. But that’s in law enforcement’s hands.”
The district will continue to take these threats seriously and act as if there is an explosive device involved. Spets says the cost is too great if they don’t. “Students, staff, and the public’s safety is paramount in everything that we do.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Everest Metro Police Department at 715-359-4202. No further information about the incident will be released at this time.
