WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Marathon County and with four cities that were impacted by storm damage last year will receive additional funding from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
On July 28, 2021, Marathon County along with Omro, Ripon, Tomahawk, and Watertown had extensive storm damage from severe weather. When grants were first submitted, the municipalities asked for $228,435 from the DNR’s Urban Forestry Catastrophic Storm Grant program, at that time the grant funds were limited to $104,920. They will now get an additional $123,600 in aid from reserve funds. The grand total of funding received will be $228,520.
The DNR submitted a request to the Joint Committee on Finance, to assist with funding, and to transfer additional funds from the forestry emergency reserve. The committee approved the request of $123,600. As a result, all five communities will be eligible to receive the total amount that was requested on their grant applications.
Marathon County’s Assistant Director of Operations, Andrew Sims, says the funds the county received will go towards the city of Wausau’s general fund, totaling just under $30,000.
