NEW YORK, NY (WSAU) — Major League Baseball’s players and owners spent just 15 minutes at the negotiating table on Thursday.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale the session included an increased request from the players for a pre-arbitration bonus pool, which was quickly rejected by the owners.
The #MLBPA requested an increase from $100 million to $115 million in its pre-arbitration bonus pool in its latest proposal in exchange for the arbitration eligibility class to include 80% of its players with 2 years of service instead of 100%. MLB called it a non-starter.

Thursday marked day 78 of the lockout, and you can count on two hands the number of times the players and owners have met for negotiations. Despite that, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says he feels there will still be a full season in 2022.
The scheduled opening of Spring Training came and went with no acknowledgment from either side this week. Major League Baseball’s official website continues to provide nothing more than historical features on players that have long retired and brief updates on their proposals to the players association.
Spring Training Games are scheduled to begin on February 25th with three teams playing exhibitions against NCAA schools. The first full slate of games begins the next day with the Brewers opening against the LA Angels.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the owners have set a deadline of Monday, February 28th for a resolution that would allow the regular season to start on time. Opening Day is currently scheduled for Thursday, March 31st.
