STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Face coverings will be encouraged instead of required for students, staff, and guests in the Stevens Point school district beginning Monday.
According to a news release from the district, a decrease in the transmission rate for the disease in Portage County along with a significant drop in cases through the district has allowed them to roll back the requirement.
“While this will come as welcome news to some, it will create anxiety and concern for others. We will support your decision to wear or not wear a face-covering when in District buildings,” read a statement from the district.
Face coverings will be required for those under the age of 4, and those using school transportation such as busses or district-owned vehicles. The latter falls in line with federal guidance regarding transportation.
District leaders add that they want parents to have conversations with their children about what measures will make them feel safe, and to reach out to the district with any questions.
Additionally, school leaders will hold discussions with students about how to handle the change, including how to respect the choices of other students when it comes to face coverings.
Mitigation strategies such as testing and isolation will remain in place for now. Any other changes to COVID-19 protocols will be communicated with students and staff appropriately.
