WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The State Patrol is investigating a multi-vehicle incident that occured north of Wausau Friday.
Officers were called to the area of 51 and County Road K after 4 PM where a total of 39 vehicles had crashed in the southbound lane.
Ten injuries were reported as a result of the pile-up, and multiple people had to be extracted from their vehicles. Some of the injured were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, and some found other means of transportation.
The State Patrol shut down both southbound and northbound lanes in the area for about four hours while the scene was cleared.
Falling and blowing snow caused low visibility and slick conditions at the time of the crash. The incident, along with other crashes and slide-offs, prompted the State Patrol to close some traffic gates along Highway 51/Interstate 39 Friday evening.
