WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office reported a total of 174 vehicle crashes from Friday night through Saturday morning as snow and blowing snow created dangerous travel conditions.
WAOW TV reports that 30 of those crashes involved injuries and over 140 involved property damage. Ten of those injuries came from one single incident; a 40-car pileup that closed down both north and southbound lanes of US 51 near County Road K north of Wausau.
The conditions prompted officials to close a portion of US 51/Interstate 39 for several hours Friday night into Saturday.
Difficult travel conditions are expected again to start the new week as up to 8 inches of snow is expected between Monday and Tuesday. Winter Storm Watches are posted for an area from the Twin Cities to Western Wisconsin, but as of Sunday morning, nothing has been posted for Central Wisconsin.
