WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg and City Council President Becky McElhaney have called a special Committee of the Whole meeting of the Council to discuss PFAS in the city’s drinking water.
The meeting is agendized for Tuesday at 7 PM, or immediately following the regular Council meeting that night which begins at 6:30. The agenda includes public comment and a presentation on PFAS and a discussion about short-term solutions to the issue.
No action is agendized for the meeting.
Mayor Rosenberg called for a special meeting of the council to discuss the matter two weeks ago when it was announced that all six of Wausau’s drinking water wells showed levels of the so-called forever chemicals that are above the proposed state recommendation of 20 parts per trillion, but below the EPA’s standard of 70 PPT.

The Water Works Utility held a special meeting on the matter last week, where leaders discussed some short-term options to the issue but made no recommendation and took no action. They also gave the utility approval to explore filtration options for the city’s new drinking water treatment plant that would filter out the chemicals to below the proposed state standard.
Both Rosenberg and Public Works Director Eric Lindman have made it clear that their expectation is the city’s water will be compliant with Wisconsin DNR standards when the new plant comes online this summer.
