RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A Northwoods janitor convicted of sexually assaulting a student will have a new trial.
That ruling was handed down by Oneida County Judge Michael Bloom on February 17, with Bloom citing ineffective counsel at trial.
Stavros Iliopoulos, 69, of Tomahawk was found guilty in 2019 of child enticement, false imprisonment and first-degree sexual assault of child younger than 13.
Officials say he took a 10-year-old student into a closet, where he touched and kissed her. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison, followed by 16 years of extended supervision.
At the time, Iliopoulos was an independently contracted janitor working at Northwoods Community Elementary School in Cassian.
A new trial date hasn’t been set.
