ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) – PFAS, or ‘forever chemicals’ have been detected in Rothschild’s drinking water.
The voluntary testing was conducted on February 2nd. Results were returned to the Rothschild Water Utility last Friday. The test results range from “just above” state groundwater standards to “below”.
The village said the samples were “at levels that we believe indicate additional action was warranted.”
The village has four wells. One, well #4, will be shut down because of the test results. The community’s water needs can be met from the three remaining wells.
The state’s Natural Resources Board is meeting Wednesday to discuss statewide PFAS standards. Current federal guidelines call for levels to be below 70-parts-per-trillion. The state standards could be stricter, at 20-parts-per-trillion.
Rothschild is planning another round of water testing on February 21s. The village says the water remains safe for cooking and drinking.
