We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…….
In 1972 the band Traffic was on hiatus as leader Steve Winwood battled peritonitis. To fill the time band member Jim Capaldi released a solo record called “Oh, How We Danced”. It was a solid solo effort backed, not only by his Traffic mates, but the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and Memphis Horns. And some great guest spots from Free guitarist Paul Kossoff.
Its mostly originals with the odd cover being an Al Jolson song from the 1920’s. Here is the original…
And here is Capaldi’s cover, It works. Great stuff from David Hood and Roger Hawkins on bass & drums. Kossoff’s stinging guitar and those awesome horns.
My other faves include “Love Is All You Can Try” with Winwood on guitar and more great horn work…and “Don’t Be A Hero” which has a great Kossoff solo and stellar organ work from Barry Beckett. If you like Traffic, check out “How Much Can A Man Really Take” featuring Kossoff again and Chris Wood with some of his unmistakeable flute work.
It’s no Low Spark of High Heeled Boys….but it does give us a nice diversion and some great backing work from some old pros.
