WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The details of an alleged sexual assault against an Afghan leader in Wausau has been made public, and the suspect has entered a not guilty plea to the charges
Matiullah Matie, 40, appeared in Marathon County court Thursday afternoon to face the charges fo the first time since his arrest. According to the complaint, a woman told investigators that Matie invited her to dinner at his home. She says Matie asked her to have a drink but didn’t want to be seen consuming alcohol in front of his family.
The two drove to a nearby gas station where the woman adds that she felt pressured to drink with him. When she finished the beverage, she claimed Matie kissed her on both cheeks and then tried to force his tongue into her mouth. She also claims Matie took her hand and forced it against his groin against her will.
Matie was arrested on February 2 and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault, a misdemeanor. He was immediately released on a signature bond.
The charges carry a maximum of nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Matie is a well-known tribal leader from Afghanistan who cooperated with American troops. He and his family were among the first Afghan refugees to be resettled in the Wausau area.
