Pointers Head To WIAC Title Game

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – (UWSP-WSAU) — The No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team (21-5-1) is headed to its eighth-consecutive WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver’s) championship game after 3-2 win over UW-Superior (15-12-2) in Saturday’s second semifinal.

The Pointers opened the scoring at 5:35 of the first period. Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) scored his seventh of the year off a feed from fellow senior Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis.).

UWSP doubled it lead at 8:11 of the first with David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa.) netting his first of the night. Cody Moline (North Branch, Minn.) provided the assist on the goal.

The Yellowjackets pulled one back late in the first on the power play. Early in the second period, UWS looked for the equalizer, but the Pointers killed off 90 seconds of a 5-on-3 to hold the lead.

At 14:14 of the second period, Hill scored his second of the night with Brett Humberstone (Kingston, Ont.) proving the helper.

The Yellowjackets made it a one-goal affair again late in the second period. In the third period, the Pointers kept the pressure on, but neither team was able to add a goal.

Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind.) made 19 saves for the Pointers. UWS goaltender Myles Hektor had 29 saves.

The Pointers will face UW-Eau Claire in the Commissioner’s Cup final on Saturday (March 5) at K.B. Willett Arena at 7:00 p.m. It marks the fifth meeting between the teams in the title game in the last six years.
