RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program encourages people who need help paying their utilities to reach out.
WHEAP has noticed an increase in people applying for heating assistance recently. Barbara Klug is Bureau Director of the Home Energy Plus Program in Wisconsin. She says they weren’t seeing too many applications in the early months of winter. Klug believes the child tax credit was a big factor in why. “Some folks were using that funding to stay caught up on their bills and food and just daily living expenses. Now that that has ended, then we had that cold snap, and natural gas prices and other fuel prices started to increase.”
Klug says there’s plenty of funding available to help people pay off their heating and other utility bills.
Eligibility is based on income. “If you are having a hard time paying your bill and if you’re just even giving up some of your medication or food to pay your energy bills, please just call to apply.”
You can call 1-866-HEAT-WIS for information and to apply.
