INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WSAU) — Wisconsin MBB Coach Greg Gard has been named the Associated Pres’ Big Ten Coach of the Year, and G Johnny Davis has claimed Player of the Year honors.
Gard helped build a team that was slotted 10th out of 14 in the league’s preseason media and coaches’ poll into a squad that finished second in the league. Along the way they also captured the prestigious Maui Jim Maui Invitational title with a win over the University of Houston, who was nationally ranked at the time.
Davis is averaging 20 PPG, the most by a Badger since the 1994 season, and has managed to step his game up against ranked opponents as well- averaging 24.1 PPG in those contests.
He beat out Iowa’s Keegan Murray for the honor. Both were also named first-team All B1G alongside Jayden Ivey of Purdue, EJ Liddell of Ohio State, and Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn.
The awards were announced on Tuesday in Indianapolis, where the league tournament is set to begin on Wednesday with two first-round games. Wisconsin doesn’t enter the field until Friday when they play a quarterfinal game against either Maryland or Michigan State, who meet Thursday evening in the second round.
