WAUSAU, WI (WSA) — A man found guilty of third-degree sexual assault in 2016 and 2019 has reached the end of his sentence.
The Marathon County Sex Offender CORE Team has announced that James M Smith will be released to transitional housing today. He will be monitored and put on a strict schedule regarding time in the community for work and treatment and will be subject to GPS monitoring.
The sentence against Smith stemmed from an incident in 2015 in which he was accused of a dozen counts of sexual assault, disorderly conduct, and false imprisonment. He was found guilty of three counts as part of a plea deal and sentenced to two years in prison and four years of extended supervision.
Then in 2019, he was found guilty due to a no contest plea of one count of third-degree sexual assault, which resulted in a three-year sentence.
Smith will be required to maintain his current address on the Wisconsin sex offender registry.
