We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
It began as a side hustle for guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady from the regular gig with Jefferson Airplane. They had added violinist Papa John Creach and drummer Sammy Piazza to fill out the sound and had released two “live” LPs earlier before coming out with their first studio effort “Burgers” in early 1972.
The album is a nice mix of the country-blues that the group was known for as well as some straight blues like “Ode For Billy Dean”. They cover Blind Boy Fuller’s “Keep On Truckin” featuring some nice work from Creach. They also cover Let Us Get Together Right Down Here from the Rev Gary Davis.
Also, check out Sea Child for a nice dose of Airplane like pyschedelic rock.
One of the great guitarists of his era having some and sounding good.
