We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
One of the great early, live records of the 1970s…a decade that saw everybody release double-live records, is one you might have missed…and it’s a killer. The second LP from Edgar Winter’s White Trash was a double live set taken from concerts at the Apollo Theater and Academy of Music in New York and the Whiskey a Go Go in LA.
The band kicks ass whether they are playing rock n roll, blues, r&b or soul. The three trumpets and 2 saxophones are tighter than Edgar’s pants and the guitars from Rick Derringer & guest Johnny Winter (yes, Edgar’s more famous at the time brother) cook.
Alot of the songs are familiar. Covers of Otis Redding’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Loose” and Chuck Berry’s “Back In The USA” stand out. Johnny Winter sings and solos on Derringers’s “Rock & Rool Hoochie Koo” which would be a solo hit for Derringer in the near future. They also do a 17 minute jam on the old John D. Loudermilk classic ‘Tobacco Road”.
We shopuld also mention the standout vocals from Edgar, Derringer and especially Jerry La Croix who’s voice is a monster.
This album is a good ole time. The idea of a live record should be to show the energy of a group while performing…this one does, and the fact that one of the places they do it is the iconic Apollo Theater before a mostly black audience should not be discounted.
Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy!
