WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Canadian mining company has expressed interest in digging up a metal deposit in the Town of Easton along with another deposit in Taylor County.
Green Light Metals says they have begun the process of permitting for the deposits after purchasing the rights from Aquila Resources last year for $7 million.
Aquila had owned the rights to the deposits but never went through with opening them up after Republicans led the charge to lift the state’s so-called “mining moratorium” in 2017.
The company says the deposit in Easton contains over 450,000 tons of gold reserves, while the Bend reserve in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest contains 4 million tons of copper and gold. That’s led the company to file paperwork with officials in Canada saying they have an “economic interest” in the reserves, and that they deserve further exploration.
The Wisconsin DNR says Green Light Metals will need to go through the entire permitting process before they can begin mining the deposits.
