We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago……
One of the biggest TV stars of the late 50’s-early 60’s continued his remake in 1972 as Rick Nelson released the Lp “Garden Party” with his group the Stone Canyon Band.
Nelson had left his teen idol days behind with a series of seminal country-rock albums and you can add this to a list of stellar efforts.
The LP included the smash hit title track which is Nelson’s rebuttal of his less than enthusiastic reception at a Madison Square Garden oldies show where he annoyed the crowd by playing some of his new stuff.
But the LP is much more than just the hit…..it includes a cover of Chuck Berry’s “I’m Talking About You” which veers from rock to country to jazz all in under four minutes.
Some other favorites of mine include “Night Time Lady” (Glenn Frey wished he wrote this one) and “Flower Opens Gently By”.
The band is top notch with Allen Kemp’s lead guitar, Stephen Love’s solid bass and the beautiful steel guitar of Tom Brumley who once played for Buck Owens Buckaroos standing out.
You should not have been expecting “Hello, Mary Lou” by this time. Nelson had re-invented himself and in the process moved the country-rock genre forward.
