SAN FRANCISCO, CA (WSAU) — The Duke Blue Devils claimed the Men’s West Region Championship with a 78-69 win over Arkansas Saturday.
The win extends Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s career by another week, sending him to his 13th career Final Four, which sets a new NCAA men’s record.
Krzyzewski had been tied with legendary UCLA coach John Wooden with 12 Final Four appearances.
Villanova also claimed a spot in New Orleans with a 50-44 win over Houston in the South Region final in San Antonio.
Later today the final two spots in the national semifinals will be decided with upstart St. Peter’s (NJ) taking on North Carolina in the East final in Philadelphia. The Midwest Championship will match Miami (FL) and Kansas in Chicago.
St. Peter’s is looking to become just the third double-digit seed to reach the Final Four dating back to 2006 when George Mason won the Washington, DC Regional. Then in 2010 Virginia Commonwealth University made a run to the national semifinals after winning their First Four game in the first year of the 68-team format.
Both the Rams and Patriots made the Final Four as 11 seeds. St Peter’s would become the lowest seed ever to reach the final weekend as a 13.
In the Women’s tournament, the Elite Eight is now set. Yesterday’s results saw NC State defeat Notre Dame 66-63, Uconn top Indiana 75-58, Louisville over Tennessee 76-64, and Michigan over South Dakota 52-49.
Those four winners join today’s Regional Finalists Creighton, South Carolina, Texas, and Stanford. The Bluejays are looking to crash the Final Four party by knocking off perennial power South Carolina in the Greensboro, SC regional. Texas and Stanford are the top two seeds in the Spokane Regional.
The Women’s Final Four will be held at Target Center in Minneapolis.
