ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) — Just like everyone else in the Wausau area, the Village of Rothschild is monitoring PFAS levels in their municipal drinking water supply.
Administrator Gary Olsen says despite currently offering levels that are below the 20 parts per trillion mark, his staff is still going to examine ways to eliminate as many of the chemicals as possible.
“Our main goal is the health and safety of our customers,” said Olsen. “We are going to be looking at a way to reduce these numbers down even further. We’ll be looking at other communities around us [that are building] a new treatment plant [or are] finding ways that they can reduce PFAS.”
Olsen says he is having regular conversations with other local leaders including Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg and other Administrators that are also dealing with the contaminants, and the information sharing among those leaders has been key to understanding what they are up against when it comes to the emerging contaminants.
“I have regular conversations with the Mayor and other Administrators. One thing I’ll say in the 5 years I’ve been here, I’ve been very impressed with the way that we all work together and share information. The information sharing is already happening and we are all trying to help each other out. It’s not like we are all silos, although we are each our own community we constantly have each other’s back.”
Olsen says the Village Water Utility Commission will meet Monday evening to discuss ways to further decrease the contaminates. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to educate themselves about PFAS and take action on their own if they feel it is necessary by either purchasing appropriate filters or using bottled water for cooking and drinking.
Other topics Olsen discussed with WSAU’s Mike Leischner include:
Start of video- new apartment development near Ceder Creek and new fire station
5:50- dog park proposal
10:45- PFAS contamination in the Village drinking water supply
