WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The City of Wausau ran out of free bottled water at the public pickup location at the Wausau Water Works building after a few hours on Monday.
The city says it is working on getting more, but an estimated time was not given.
A message from the city says: “Due to high demand, the current supply of bottled water has been fully distributed. The City is in process of sourcing additional water to ensure consistent availability for residents. Please watch the City of Wausau website and social media for updates.”
Bottled water is being distributed because of PFAS, or forever chemicals, in the municipal water supply. Levels are likely to go down when the city’s new filtration plant goes online in August.
The city also distributing free filtration pitchers starting next week. They anticipate the first order of water filter pitchers to be available the week of April 4. They ask for people to pre-register to reserve a pitcher so the city can manage demand and coordinate pick up as smoothly as possible. You can pre-register here or by calling 715-261-6804 and leaving your name, address, phone number, email address and any other pertinent details. The city will then contact you when the pitcher is ready to be picked up.
