We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
I’m not quite sure how to describe the 2nd Lp from the Irish trio known as Thin Lizzy. “Shades of a Blue Orphanage”, which was released in 1972, really doesnt fit into any easy pigeon-holes. The songs are a melange of styles with no discernible pattern.
I like much of it although it’s not an easy listen. The first cut, ‘The Rise and Dear Demise of the Funky Nomadic Tribes” chugs along nicely but is not indicative of what will follow.
“Baby Face”, “Chatting Today” and “Call The Police” all have moments and can be quite compelling for reasons I can’t quite put a finger on. The title track is interesting in an “atmospheric” way.
I guess all I can suggest is listen to this yourself and make up your own mind on what this is. There is no hit single ala ‘The Boys Are Back In Town”, but Phil Lynott, Eric Bell & Brian Downey should be congratulated for pushing the musical envelope.
