SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA (MetroSource-WSAU) — For the first time in eight years, the United States Men’s National Soccer Team will be participating in the FIFA World Cup.
The USMNT clinched its spot in Qatar after falling to Costa Rica 2-0. The U.S. needed to lose by less than six goals to finish third in CONCACAF’s Octagonal qualifying table and qualify for Qatar.
The United States joins Canada and Mexico in qualifying directly for the 32-nation tournament this November and December in Qatar. Costa Rica will play an international playoff in June against New Zealand for one of the final three places in the tournament.
This marks the 11th World Cup appearance in the history of the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team, and first since the 2014 event in Brazil.
FIFA will conduct the official draw for the tournament on Friday in Qatar, which will determine who the United States will play in their three group stage matches.
