STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Plover man has been arrested on suspicion of abusing a four-month-old boy who suffered life-threatening injuries.
David Schmies appeared in Portage County Court this week for one felony count of child abuse causing great bodily harm.
The investigation started when the baby was taken to a Stevens Point area emergency room with numerous injuries which doctors said were consistent with the boy being squeezed very hard in the mid to low chest area. That included broken ribs, some of which were in various stages of healing, and other broken bones.
The boy also had a fractured skull, bruises, and a rash. none of the injuries could have occurred because of a fall from a bed like Schmies had indicated.
From Stevens Point, the child was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Marshfield. An update on his condition has not been given.
The 22-year-old is being held on a $50,000 signature bond. Court records show he has refused to sign. He’ll be back in court on April 11th for a preliminary hearing.
If convicted he faces up to 40 years in prison.
