WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A five-day trial is in order for a Wisconsin Rapids man accused of putting a drug commonly used to terminate a pregnancy in his girlfriend’s unattended water bottle.
Jeffrey Smith appeared in Marathon County court Monday where Judge LaMont Jacobson gave final instructions to both sides and gave the go-ahead for the trial to begin on May 2nd. Smith faces one count of attempted first-degree homicide against an unborn child and a count of illegally manufacturing or delivering prescription drugs. Both are felonies.
The charges stem from a January 18th, 2018 incident when police were called to a home on North 3rd Avenue in Wausau. When officers arrived, they talked with a woman who was 20 weeks pregnant. She accused the father of the child of putting something in her water bottle, adding that he had previously tried to convince her to get an abortion.
The bottle was taken to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab for testing. Results showed the presence of Mifepristone, which is a drug used to terminate a pregnancy. Empty packages of Mifepristone were also found at Smith’s home in Grand Rapids.
Smith is out on bond and has been staying with family in north-central Minnesota. He has previously pled not guilty to the charges.
