We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
If you listen to the “Layla” from Derek & The Dominoes you know Bobby Whitlock. His fingerprints are allo over that classic LP, writing or co-writing seven of the albums fourteen tracks and delivering his soulful keyboard work and vocals to big chunks of the record.
In 1972 he released his first solo album and his friends all joined in to help. And what a group of friends to draw from.
After playing with the Dominos and touring with Delaney & Bonnie as well, Whitlock’ rolodex was stuffed with old pros and big stars.
Here is a list of the songs & players on the album….

Symphony Orchestra
The gospel drenched stuff like “A Day Without Jesus” is good. My other faves include “I’d Rather Live A Straight Life”, “Country Life” and the cool, bluesey “The Scenery Has Slowly Changed” featuring some great work from a heroin addled Eric Clapton.
Hearing George Harrison, Clapton, Jim Gordon, Delaney & Bonnie, Chris Wood and the others playing just for the fun of it is always a treat.
It’s a solid addition to the catalog of early Southern Rock and although mostly ignored at the time, deserves a listen.
