WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The District 1 Alder race in Wausau between John Kroll and Carol Lukens is officially coming down to a recount.
City Clerk Kaitlyn Bernarde announced Wednesday that Kroll has filed the paperwork for a recount. She then immediately scheduled proceedings to begin at 11:45 AM Thursday at City Hall.
Certified results from last week’s election show Lukens winning the seat by two votes over Kroll 471-469. There were three write-in votes.
The petition was filed Wednesday morning. According to Kroll “in a race decided by little room for error, any discrepancies that may have occurred during ballot reprinting or transposing may change the election results.”

Wausau District 1 includes Wards 1 and 2, which experienced complications on election day when poll workers ran out of ballots. That led to a batch of new ballots being printed, which the vote-counting machines couldn’t read. A third batch was later printed which could be read.
During that process, some voters filled out temporary ballots which were transferred over to ballots from the third printing by election supervisors.
