We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago….
After having the biggest hit of his career in 1971 (Do You Know What I Mean?), Lee Michaels went back to what he liked best. Blues based jams on his keyboards and guitar. And this time he added talented ax-man Drake Levin to his crew along with bassist Joel Christie & drummer Keith Knudsen (later to join the Doobie Brothers)
The album “Space & First Takes” (his sixth) includes two long rambles through some guitar based jams and two shorter songs. Not as much organ as we are used to from Michaels recorded work.
Levin shines on this. He cut his teeth on those early Paul Revere & The Raider albums and later formed a band called The Brotherhood with his old Raider pals Phil Volk and Mike Smith. He was once speaking to a young Seattle guitarist who said he liked what Levin was doing. That guitarist was named Jimi Hendrix.
If you like the crunch and blang of guitar, bass & drums, this will hit your sweet spot.
